Pocas Palabras answers the common complaint that Monterey County is boring with their hip-hop style focused on social awareness, self-empowerment and knowledge. Comprised of Ricardo Garcia (formerly of Para La Gente) and Sergio Martinez, hope to center their music and shows around community building. They feel there is a void right now with rap artists riffin' in a positive direction-not to mention venues for it. Pocas Palabras has played Casa Sorrento before with San Jose-based rap group Projekt S.E.E.R., and is planning a show in August at SOMOS Media. These are the clear local exceptions. Following a Kids Need Help, Inc. canned food drive for orphans in the Philippines last month, the group is now orchestrating a book drive for the same cause. They hope to give back locally in the future, and have stopped in at both Fremont Elementary and North Salinas High School for lunchtime performances to audiences Garcia described as "super receptive."
