Whether sashaying through a Brazilian samba or inventing a new twist on an old jazz standard, Pink Martini invites the world to dance and sing. The "little orchestra"'s founders, pianist Thomas Lauderdale and vocalist China Forbes, draw on their multicultural backgrounds and international travels to present an eclectic repertoire of tunes that harken back to '40s-era Hollywood musicals while integrating influences from around the globe. As Lauderdale puts it, "If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully we’d be that band." They'll try and get their audience shakin' (not stirred) tonight at the Sunset Center. [RR]
