There’s a sweetness about P.G.’s devotion to its own history, a past made
current through annual celebrations like Good Old Days and Feast of
Lanterns. But it’s Chautauqua Days that draws the deepest connection to
the city’s origins: In 1879, the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific
Circle—an educational network born from a Methodist teachers’ training
in Lake Chautauqya, N.Y—held its first meeting in the 4-year-old city of
P.G. Its legacy continues during this three-day festival, when dozens
of venues will hold events celebrating the city’s culture, heritage and
natural assets. It kicks off on Friday at noon with a showcase of local art at Pacific Grove Art Center (see Artist Open Studio Tour Hot Pick), followed by a lecture and dance jam 7pm at P.G. Library. On Saturday, the culture is live with a figure drawing class, lectures and an art reception (see Ray Troll Hot Pick), a play for the wee ones and songs at the library. The Annual Butterfly Parade and Bazaar brings out P.G.’s cutest little humans march through town in their monarch butterfly regalia, welcoming the orange-and-black beauties back to town (10:30am, Robert Down School, 373-3304). On Sunday, while three other events bring P.G.’s history to life, P.G.’s 130-year-old Chautauqua Hall becomes a portrait in local talent, featuring fine arts and crafts, silent auction, live music and munchies (10am-4pm). All net proceeds benefit The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove. [KA]
