The Met: Live in HD Season Opening Performance of Anna Bolena at Century Cinemas

This marriage between one of the oldest Western arts, opera stewarded expertly by the Metropolitan Opera, and HD satellite technology has been a raging success and a cultural boon to thousands and thousands, maybe millions, of opera aficionados not privy to an in-person Met performance. This season will visit great works like Manon, Faust, Satyagraha (by Philip Glass, in his 75th year) and two of Wagner's mighty Ring Cycles. It starts with Donizetti and his bel canto pinnacle Anna Bolena, which is a showcase work for the best singers. And the Met has one in soprano Anna Netrebko who takes on the title role of a queen who is driven mad by her adulterous king. It's directed by DAvid McVicar, responsible for the record-breaking Il Trovotore last year, and conducted by Marco Armiliato. The encore comes 6:30pm Nov. 2—a more reasonable time for this kind of operatic power, I think. [WR]
