Monterey Underwater Film Festival at Golden State Theatre

Much of this 30-year-old festival is geared toward ocean photographers and filmmakers. Like the classes, equipment demos, seminars and the 24-hour photography competition that'll take place right in our bay (you can check out the winners at a 3pm Sunday wrap-up at MPC's Lecture Forum 103). But the broad heart of the to-do is a special film/photography presentation being held at Golden State Theatre 7:30-10pm Saturday that brings behind-the-camera (and under the surface) masters of the adventurous craft, responsible for some of the most iconic and arresting ocean life images and footage. Emmy-winner Rick Rosenthal, the night's headliner, provided key footage for BBC's Blue Planet and Disney Nature's EARTH; Stephen Frink is one of the most published marine photographers and will share some of his "greatest hits"; IMAX cinematographer Chuck Davis is on the Cousteau team; Eric Cheng specializes in sperm whales and giant squid; and Berkley White, who owns seminal underwater photography store Backscatter in Cannery Row, possesses years of history in the biz.
