This is the year-round spot for cool or hot, sophisticated or gruff, swingin' or bluesy jazz music. And it serves as a pretty strong satellite to this weekend's planet of Monterey Jazz Festival. A pre-festival jazz line-up (7pm Thu) includes guitarist Calvin Keys, who's played with Ahmad Jamal and MC Hammer, backed by bassist Pete Lips and drum doctor David Morwood, with Lee Durley bringing surprise guests later (and knowing the caliber of talent in town, you can only guess who that will be). 4-7pm Friday, bassist/vocalist Nat Johnson, pianist Marshall Otwell and Morwood on drums do it up; later that night, at 9:30pm, the Eddie Mendenhall jazz band is joined by Bootza Necak and Morwood. Saturday at 9pm, the Andrew Speight All Star Band enlists pianist Mathew Clark and bassist Michael Zisman. On Sunday, starting 10am (which doesn't sound much like musician hours), guitarist Barry Finnerty, who's played in the Miles Davis band, is joined by all star bassist/composer Aaron Germain. [WR]
7pm Thu; 7pm and 9:30pm Fri; 9pm Sat; 10am Sun. Hyatt Regency Hotel, One Old Golf Course Road, Monterey. Free. 277-8026.
