Luis Rodriguez broke free of the gang-ridden East L.A. barrios through poetry, and turned to words, in the form of a memoir, to save his teenage son from the cycle of violence and poverty that nearly claimed him. The sequel to his cautionary tale, entitled "It Calls You Back: A Writer's Odyssey Through Love, Addictions, Recovery and Healing," hits shelves this October; he'll share insights from that and other works Wednesday evening. Poetic Justice, a theatre group of formerly incarcerated actors and artists, sets the stage with an opening performance.
7pm, Steinbeck Institute of Art and Culture, Sherwood Hall, 940 N. Main St., Salinas. $10/members, $15/non-members, $7/students with ID.
