When we see Iran in the headlines these days, the context is usually nuclear or political. But the art that Iranians create is worth some good press as well. When Taraneh Hemami came to the US in 1978 to pursue studies at the University of Oregon, she planned to return to Iran after completing her program. However, during her first year of school, the Iranian Revolution ignited, preventing her from returning home for more than a decade. Hemami's art explores the complex struggle of trying to secure a sense of belonging in her country of residence while maintaining a relationship with her native country and culture. The community will have the opportunity to learn about Hemami's work when she visits CSUMB to talk about her life and art. Hemami's visit will conclude the school's Visiting Artist Series for the academic year. [JAF]
