Vincenzo Bellini's masterpiece of bel canto opera (basically, Italian opera) about a high priestess whose desire for a Roman soldier throws her into conflict between duty and love is best known for its star aria, the restrained and beautiful "Casta Diva," which sports the same arpeggios as "Ave Maria" so it may sound familiar for that reason or, having been used in various films, on its own terms. It's performed at the outdoor Teatro Antico Taormina in Italy in this live rebroadcast from Emerging Pictures's Opera in Cinema series. [WR]
