Jovan Smith, aka J. Stalin, grew up in the mean, lean parts of Oakland selling candybars on the BART as a kid before switching it up to selling drugs. He's changed up his gameplan again and now sells that "hyphy"-style Bay-Yay Area brand of rap music, heavy on synth and club-ready samples and beats, with dalliances of R&B Autotune singing. His video for "Who r u" is a marriage/relationship lament that has crossover appeal (and he fronts a band, which is promising). His latest album, Memoirs of a Curb Server, is a document of a young black man trying to come up and make sense of it all, with collabos with Big Krit, Mista Fab, Yuckmouth, Too $hort and E-40. J-Blaze brings J. Stalin and crew out to Monterey to do that thang. [WR]
