Japanese photographer Watanabe—a 1975 graduate of the Department of Photography, College of Art, Nihon University—enjoyed a career in TV commercial production, but in 1995 devoted himself exclusively to photography. He has published 11 books and completed more than 20 projects, in his characteristic style, primarily revolving around portraits, including kabuki players, Japanese monkey dancers and patients at San Lazaro Psychiatric Hospital. His lecture is followed by a wine reception at the Center for Photographic Art's Apertures & Appellations event (for a separate charge), starring Weekly staff photographer Nic Coury. [WR]

2-4pm lecture. Carpenter Hall, Sunset Center, San Carlos between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel. $20/general; $5/member. 625-5181, www.photography.org.
