Michelle Magdalena Maddox has been training her unique lens on the world since she was a senior at Pacific Grove High 10 years ago. The Brooks Institute of Photography graduate has since cultivated a distinct style that is at once old-fashioned and edgy, nostalgic and political. Photographic muses blending nature and society—from Big Sur nudes to vaudeville characters—have earned her national and international awards in fine art and advertising. This rare showing at The Independent, which plays with the theme “Contact Emotion,” samples the best from every show over that decade, and adds an exclusive look at her newest work. All of the images are for sale; 17 percent of profits are donated to the United Nations Foundation. Refreshments will be served, and Magdalena hints she might—just might—break into song and dance. Free. 6-8:30pm, The Independent Gallery, 600 Ortiz Ave., Sand City. www.michellemagdalena.com.
