The Bay Area-based company melds classical ballet techniques with modern dance language in performances that are demanding and sprightly, controlled and spirted, old and new, and, in this holiday alternative to the Nutcracker (though the Nutcracker is enduring, delightful and classic) varied in its approach to the holiday season, primarily Christmas. Expect choreographed pieces from the acclaimed dance company’s resident choreographer Amy Seiwert, Smuin dancer Jane Rehm and former Smuin dancer Darren Anderson, scored to Bach, sacred carols, klezmer, gospel and Elvis. On Friday, free to all, Sunset Center hosts a holiday party in their environs with snacks, hot chocolate, photographs, carolers and a trek to the city of Carmel’s tree lighting at 5pm before returning to Sunset Center for Smuin’s 8pm performance.
