What better way to get into the Christmas spirit with the story of a dead guy coming back to deliver a biting indictment of 19th-century industrial capitalism. And when left to the devices of Charles Dickens, who watched the customs of Christmas cards and carols evolve in Britain after a 200-year hibernation (such festivities were banned by Oliver Cromwell in 1649), the commentary is still sassy. But if reading dense Dickensian writing isn't how you'd most like to absorb the cheer, try the festive theatrical version. MPC's interpretation trades old-fashioned garb for contemporary costumes and figures of speech, making this production an especially relatable retelling of Ebenezer Scrooge's personal transformation.
