Crumpet the Elf is a delectably despondent, yet hilarious helper of Santa in a Macys seasonal creation called Santaland. This anti-hero of Christmas and his musings is based on a seasonal job David Sedaris held and later wrote about, recounting confrontations with poorly behaved children, tightly wound parents, and the over-the-line ridiculousness and banality of his duties as department store elf. After penning Santaland Diaries, Sedaris' career took off. Kirsten Clapp adapts Sedaris' breakout work, and directs Tyler Shilstone as Crumpet in this one-man show at Monterey's Stardust Playhouse, which is NOT suitable for children. Santaland Diaries runs for two weekends; sitting in Santa's lap not required. [GS]
