Who would have ever thought that the self-proclaimed "Pope of Trash"—responsible for raunchy classics like Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living—would ever become the toast of Broadway? When film director John Waters' Hairspray hit the live stage in 2002, it became an instant success and even garnered several Tony Awards. The story is centered around overweight teen Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of one day dancing on a local TV program, The Corny Collins Show. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, Hairspray showcases the music and dance styles of the time while acting as a social commentary focusing attention on the maltreatment of blacks. [AJ]
