The legendary Sheherazade penned the exotic 14th-century tales of The Arabian Nights that brought Aladdin, Sinbad and Ali Baba into literature, and also imprinted on a masterful French composer centuries later. Ravel channeled his impression of a magical Arabia into an operatic overture on the mythical storyteller, who keeps her head by telling a new story every night for 1,001 nights to her husband, a fickle king. Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling take on Sheherazade makes instruments into characters, blending 19-century Russian motifs with Eastern sounds. The Monterey Symphony's Arabian Nights program may well draw forth a genie led by the enchanting singer Ekaterina Semenchuk, a Met Opera soloist, who also performs Berlioz's Summer Nights. [SR]
