Biographer T.J. Stiles spent seven years working on The First Tycoon : The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and it paid off big: Tycoon won the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and was hailed by the New York Times as "state-of-the-art biography." The author--who first won renown in 2002 with a fresh take on Jesse James--has brought new life to Vanderbilt's rags to riches story with incisive research and graceful prose. Stiles will speak on his craft at the Sunset Center this Tuesday, and though all are welcome, best come early if you want a seat. [DS]
