TV writer Rachel Axler has written for New Girl, Parks & Recreation and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, for which she won two Emmy's. In 2010 she struck out for Off Broadway with Smudge, a dark comedy about parenthood, the American family, love and cheesecake, revolving around a couple who "give birth to a smudge." That's about as much elucidation as we can stand for now, but the effect is apparent in Julie Crosby, the Producing Artistic Director of the Women's Project, which debuted the dark and funny play: "Rachel Axler thinks and writes like no other playwright today." [WR]
8pm Fri-Sat; through March 10. Paper Wing Theatre, 320 Hoffman Ave., Monterey. $20. 905-5684, www.PaperWingTheatreCo.com.
