Verdi's early work, and one not staged often in America, Ernani is broadcast live in HD from the Met in New York. Opera lovers get a chance to see this love story/tragedy in the comfort of a local movie theater, and don't even need to wear a gown or tux that is smiled upon when visiting an opera house for a performance. Angela Meade (soprano) plays Elvira, who is the object of Ernani's affection. Ernani is played by Marcello Giordani (tenor), who finds himself at odds with the King of Spain and Elvira's uncle, Don Ruy Gomez de Silva. This is a Verdi drama of high intensity and intrigue, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats since it was first performed in 1844. Ernani comes in four acts with intermissions during its 4 hour run time. [GS]
