Bagpipes, haggis and heavy lifting. Yes, its Scottish Games and Celtic Festival time on the Peninsula. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more legitimate Scottish experience anywhere outside the soggy highlands. The games themselves are chock full of world-class athletes, including 5-time World Champion and 11-time US National Champion Ryan Vierra. They’ll be going head to head in events like the Braemar stone—basically the same as shot-put, but with an 20-26 pound oblong rock—and the sheaf toss, which involves launching a burlap sack of straw over a 30-foot elevated limbo bar with a pitchfork. All while wearing a kilt. Over 50 vendors will be on hand peddling traditional British and Scottish food, drink and crafts. Scottish and Irish music and dance, music and storytelling will give you feel for the roots of Celtic tradition. Also, sheep dogs herding ducks, kilt shopping, family history exploration, whiskey tasting and historical re-enactments. [JE]
