For the month of July, CSUMB has a brand new bag. Last year they won the California State University-wide Summer Arts program, an program comprised of two consecutive two-week-long arts classes taught by a cadre of visiting artists and performers in the fields of music, film, photography, animation, dance and theater. Better yet, nearly every day of July (except Sundays) is given over to a different public performance/presentation, mostly on campus. The opening week alights on Los Angeles Guitar Quartet on July 2, a silent film lecture and presentation by journalist and documentarian Cari Beauchamp and composer and sound designer Michael Mortilla on July 3, The Lampshades comedy improv duo of Kate Flannery (Meredith from The Office) and Scot Robinson (Anchorman) on July 7, and more. In the coming weeks look for stage combat and choreography, a comedian who's worked with Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris, sound designers, all-day Culmination events that showcases the students' work from the two-week classes (July 14 and 28), theater performances, music, animation presentation (from a guy who's worked on the Madagascar kids' features and Megamind, and clay sculpture lectures. July is officially Summer Arts month. See the website for a full schedule, you will need it to keep track of all the creative occurrences. [WR]
