It's been a long time coming—75 years—and now it's here. Well, the pre-festival events are here this week, as a prelude to get the juices flowing for the outpouring of early, classical, contemporary and, in the stead of last year's inclusion of jazz, bluegrass music. The free open rehearsals and the special pre-fest events this week (taking place at Sunset Center, unless otherwise indicated) are popular and highly recommended as a way to preview the stellar performances coming next week. At 2:30pm Saturday, July 7, conductor Paul Goodwin will lead the orchestra, chorale and chorus through Bach's mighty Mass in B minor; on Sunday, at 4pm, there is a young musicians showcase; 10am Monday, Brahms's Symphony No. 2; noon, also on Monday, a master class session at Church of the Wayfarer; 7pm Tuesday, Alexander's Feast with the orchestra and chorale; 5pm Wednesday, a chamber concert, Bach to Beethoven, with a wine reception at the Church in the Forest; another master class open session noon Thursday, July 12. At 6pm, Friday, July 13, the festival celebrates the dawn of the Bach Festival's 75 years with a gala dinner and live auction at Carmel Valley Ranch. The next day, the notes pour forth. [WR]
