Western Stage boasts a long tradition of staging works by John Steinbeck, starting in 1992 with Alan Cook's adaptation of East of Eden, and continuing on through Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat and others. Here they put on Pastures of Heaven, adapted by acclaimed playwright Octavio Solis for the Calfornia Shakespeare Theatre and the Bay Area's Word for Word. Pastures is Steinbeck's early short story collection about the people and places of the Salinas Valleys' Corral de Tierra, and populated with hopes and aspirations. It plays on the main stage, directed by Western Stage's Jon Patrick Selover, with music direction by Don Dally. [WR]
