The Jazz Festival's 2012 Summer Jazz Camp brings together the 2012 Artist-in-Residence, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire (the 1999 and 2000 Jazz Fest High School All-Star went on to study under Terence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter), and 13 top-notch clinicians at Monterey Peninsula College with 160 of Monterey County's middle and high school music students for a two-week immersion of classes and workshops on the ins and outs of jazz music, in rehearsals, style and theory. The part you should be interested in: The kids perform free in various spots in various combos, including a student jam session 6-8pm Monday at Museum of Monterey (5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey); vocal solo mic night 6-8pm Tuesday, also at Museum of Monterey; a combos concert 7-9pm Wednesday at Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium (980 Fremont St., Monterey); and a big bands and vocal concert 7-9:30pm Thursday at Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium (835 Forest Ave., P.G.).
