Homeless Veterans Stand Down at Salinas Rodeo Grounds

Rodeo fans might think of the Salinas rodeo grounds as a place where fuming bulls buck riders into the air, but for this 48-hour period the sports complex will transform into a haven. Homeless vets will find a warm, welcoming space, sleep and eat, or receive free boots, sleeping bags and clothes. This mini-city also brings together the wide range of services available in the tri-county area, with counseling, health, VA benefit and chaplain services available for free. And not to leave out furry friends, veterinarians will be on hand for pet check-ups. For those interested in getting off the streets, this is a great place employment and housing referrals. Thanks to an army of volunteers, this two-day round-the-clock event is a rare space where class differences disappear, and a hidden community of homeless vets can share stories with volunteers and each other.
