This summer brings back six of the Metropolitan Opera's previously award-winning satellite-broadcast operas from the previous season to reprise high culture in air-conditioned environs to the (crossed fingers) high temperatures. This is amazing work projected large, from multiple camera angles, with bonus footage and interviews. They run 6:30pm Wednesdays, starting June 13 with Donizetti's Anna Bolena, in which Anna Netrebko plays the title English queen driven mad by Henry VIII, conducted by Marco Armiliato. June 20 brings that master of melody, Rossini, and his comedic opera Le Comte Ory, a Met premiere of mistaken identities about a count who seduces a lonely countess, directed by Bartlett Sher and conducted by Maurizio Benini. Mozart's beloved comic opera Don Giovanni, about an unrepentant womanizer and his beleaguered sidekick Leporello gets a new staging by Michael Grandage, with Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leading the cast June 27. Les Contes D'Hoffmann, by Offenbach, coming July 11, stars Joseph Calleja as poet Hoffmann who manages to lose three women over the course of the opera (now that's tragedy). Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor is about a fragile woman (performed by season favorite Anna Netrebko) who goes mad from an arranged marriage, a story transposed as a Victorian ghost story by Mary Zimmerman on July 18. To close out the summer encoures, they choose Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, starring Renee Fleming as a married noblewoman who "renounces her affair with a much-younger man" in 18th century Vienna.
