Cabaret at Bruce Ariss Wharf Theater

There's more than beedle deedle dee's to the catchy tunes of Cabaret, a classic musical that delves into provocative character profiles as well as politics and global conflict—but doesn't come up short on plain ol' entertainment. Monterey Peninsula Theatre Co.'s well-practiced cast breathes, sings and kicks fresh life into this 1966 gem, bringing it to local stages for the first time in nearly a decade. The storied Kit Kat Klub revives its smoky, seductive atmosphere on the scenic tip of Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf, which transports audiences to 1920s Berlin, where a young American writer and English singer meet and fall for each other, and also set into motion a currency smuggling scheme. All this love and scandal happens as the Nazis rise in the background, muddling the political nature of personal and passionate decisions these characters make. [SR]
