The prequel to the Lord of the Rings finds Bilbo Baggins and his friends leaving the comfort of their Hobbit village to go on a quest for the sacred Arkenstone, guarded by the dragon Smaug, and encountering on the way elves, goblins, trolls, the ring of invisibility and Gollum. It's a kids musical, so this can be all kinds of fun. Before this weekend's public performances, 9,000 county school kids will have seen it between March 12-16.
7pm Fri-Sat. Sherwood Hall, 940 N. Main St., Salinas. $12/adult; $10/student, senior, active military; $8/child 3-12; free/child 3 and under. 775-0976, www.arieltheatrical.org.
