Words on Stage: An Evening of Rumi’s Poetry at Indoor Forest Theater

Pacific Repertory Theater’s March presentation of Words on Stage: Voices from Great Literature features 13th century poet, jurist, theologan and Sufi mystic, Jelaludin Rumi. In the mystic tradition of Islam, Rumi seeks tawid, union with his beloved. “Beauty and Love are as body and soul./ Beauty is the mine, Love is the diamond.” Considered among the poetic wisdom of Shakespeare and Goethe, Rumi’s poetry offers swoon-worthy inspiration and wisdom through his studies of the very fine. Accompaniment on Sunday by cello, and a traditional Middle Eastern flute-like instrument called the ney on Monday, elevates the reading to the transcendent standards of Sufis past. [JB]
