A'roaming he has gone, from Scotland hills over the hills to Pebble Beach's Spanish Bay golf courses to the orchestra stage. Master bagpiper Paul Hodgins joins the Monterey Symphony in this Scottish-themed program, led by guest conductor Karen Kamensek whose globe-trotting resume includes a broad range of musical styles. Award-winning cellist László Fenyö performs Schumann's lyrical Concerto in A Minor, a haunting tune that generates shivers to rival chilly Scottish winds. Of course they'll play Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, “Scottish,” which transitions from majestic to somber to a Scottish folk dance. Bagpipes represent the rising sun at the end of a night-long wedding celebration in "An Ornkey Wedding, With Sunrise" by Maxwell Davies; come prepared to listen to a party. Or come an hour early for an informative pre-concert lecture. [SR]
