There’s no better time to revisit the history of the Carmel River. As the Monterey Peninsula sweats under a state order to cut back river pumping by 70 percent, its residents would be well served to learn the political context provided by Ray March’s meticulously researched account. March, a Carmel High graduate with a claim to Cachagua’s wild old days, traces the river’s story from the 1600s to the present and from headwaters to mouth, weaving human stories with science to create a forward-flowing narrative about the short-sighted exploitation of a life-giving resource. March’s book is a beautiful call to restore the Carmel River and the watershed that depends on it. [KA]
