Carmel, with its high density of art galleries, can be a self-guided art festival any day of the year. But this weekend the paintings spill out onto the parks, streets and outdoor locales in and around the village by the sea in events like Sculpture-in-the-Park, where you can witness works being created over the life of the fest at Devendorf Park, scored by live music; Kids Make Art (1-4pm Sat), in which tools of the trade are put into tiny hands; and the Quick Draw in which artists quickly churn out a work, which will be for sale while the paint is still wet (9am Sun); and 60 plein air artists, juried by Plein Air Painters of America president Gil Dellinger, are enlisted in the Plein Air Competition to paint a scene somewhere in the region, then the works are judged by voters and a juried panel, and awarded prizes Saturday (3:30-5pm meet the artists; 5pm awards ceremony) in a grand display near Devendorf Park, then auctioned off Saturday and Sunday. Follow the happenings and special announcements on the festival's Twitter feed. And keep an eye out for the brick and mortar galleries, which often capitalize on the art fray with parties and special events of their own. [WR]
