Talk about a lot to chew on. Carla Hall, Ben Sargent, Cindy Pawlcyn, Alton Brown, Michael Chiarello, Rick Bayless and Alexandra Guarnaschelli lead a tidal wave of remarkable and eco-responsible chefs (and give hour-long demos) as part of the most dynamic sustainable food festival in the world. The sold-out Friday gala takes guests through 75 tasting stations helmed by regional and national names like Charles Phan (Slanted Door) and Ted Walter (Passionfish), plus tastes of sustainable wines by the dozens.
The expanding slate of food-and-wine adventures (touring Big Sur or Santa Lucia Highlands with celeb chefs and snacks) and the salon series (honing in on things like making gnocchi with chefs in an intimate setting) are almost sold out, but there are tickets left for Saturday’s Iron Chef-esque Sustainable Seafood Challenge ($150 for members), and there’s always the sweep of activities included with Aquarium admission all weekend, like the vibrant cooking demos and farmers market.
7:30-10:30pm Fri gala; various events run throughout the weekend. Monterey Bay Aquarium, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey. $40-$155/event; many events free with admission. 648-4800, www.montereybayaquarium.org.
