There's no shortage of thematic subjects in Fiddler on the Roof, a timeless tale of love, loss, oppression, nationalism and family dynamics, to name a few. And that all the weighty stuff is communicated through memorable tunes and humor makes the dark plot compelling, as it follows a small Russian town's unraveling Jewish community. There's a reason audiences have been singing along with the musical rendition of Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish, turn-of-the-century stories for more than 50 years. Directed by Pacific Repertory Theatre artist-in-residence John Rousseau, scored by musicians Mike Mirada Jr., Don Dally and Stephen Tosh, and led by one of the region's premiere baritones, Reg Houston, as milkman-philosopher Tevye, Fiddler kicks off PacRep's 2012 season with that durable, hearty l'chaim.
