The Gentrain society will be surveying the gamut of reading over the last three centuries, from the good old days of cowhide covers to the silver screen of the nook. Kim Bui-Burton, current Community Services and Library Director for the city of Monterey will be recounting the history of California's first library, which was founded in Monterey, as well as discuss current and future trends of reading including the role that technology has in libraries, as well as lifelong learning in general. An avid reader herself, Kim Bui-Burton strongly believes that libraries and reading "keep us human" and one day, they will help save the world.
1:30-2:30pm. Gentrain Society at Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont street, Monterey. Free. 646-4224. www.gentrain.org
