“Religion and Gender: Identity, Conflict, and Power,” a three-day conference hosted by the new Center for Conflict Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, will highlight the complex dynamic between faith and gender in a global context. Nigerian attorney and human rights activist Hauwa Ibrahim, who has won precedent-setting rulings before Islamic Shariah courts in Nigeria, will be the keynote speaker. In her most well-known case, Ibrahim represented Amina Lawal, the Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. [KA]
