Writer Open Mic with Debrea Busman at East Village Coffee Lounge

This monthly open mic invites writers and aspiring writers every third Thursday to come early and sign up for a 5-minute spot in which to read from any work—fiction, poetry, screenplay, essay—after the featured writer reads for a 15-minute spot. On Oct. 18 that writer is Debra Busman, CSUMB professor and co-director of the Creative Writing and Social Action Program. She'll read from her book "like a woman," a series of 12 vignettes about a tough L.A. girl who navigates and ultimately escapes violence and a dysfunctional family by retreating to a family of other young people on the streets.
5:30-7:30pm. East Village Coffee Lounge, 498 Washington St., Monterey. Free. 601-9195.
