Monterey Symphony at Steinbeck Institute of Art and Culture

As a winter swell pummels Monterey Bay's shores, let a gentler yet still mighty force take your ears for a ride. The Monterey Symphony's aptly titled program, "Power," which moves to Sunset Center on Saturday and Sunday, opens with the bold chords in the overture to Verdi's La Forza del Destino, and ends with Sibelius' signature booming brass in Symphony No. 1. Award-winning pianist Tanya Gabrielian takes the keys by storm in Aram Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto in D-flat Major. While this is a plenty thrilling and, yes, powerful program of classical music, there's a melodic, mysterious thread throughout these larger-then-life works. [SR]
