For having debuted in 1598, Much Ado About Nothing feels remarkably contemporary. In the original romantic comedy, Hero and Claudio can't stop swooning over each other, while Beatrice and Benedick scorn love and marriage—until they're tricked into admitting that they've fallen for each other. Even after Beatrice dismisses her would-be lover as "a very dull fool," their verbal sparring evolves into an extended flirtation. Pacific Repertory Theatre brings the bard's comic masterpiece to the outdoor stage with its 23rd annual Shakespeare Festival. [SR]
