Strawberry Girls and Great White Caps at The Lobby at The Golden State Theatre

About a year ago, shortly after multi-instrumentalist Zachary Garren and drummer Ben Rosett met, the pair realized they fit together musically, as if they were a couple puzzle pieces. Bassist Ian Jennings was brought on board and fate gave birth to the Strawberry Girls. The instrumental trio—an intricate fusion of jazz, funk, prog-rock and world music in the vein of Mahavishnu Orchestra—has released several EPs and is close to dropping its second full-length album, French Ghetto. Openers Great White Caps dub themselves "beach rock." Its garage rock-surf cocktail makes it feel like summer all year round. The foursome is readying to release its new LP on vinyl, tour the country and film the whole damn thing—later to be part of a tour documentary. [AJ]
