Comedian Kirk McHenry caught the comedy bug at age seven by listening to a Richard Pryor record. He tried to start his comedy career in Norfolk, Virginia, after getting out of the Marines and winning a comedy competition. "It was horrible," he told Brickhouse.com. "The dude came onstage and took the mic out my hand and said 'Don't quit your dayjob.'" Good thing McHenry didn't heed that advice, because the Oakland-based comedian launched his career from Dorothy's Locker in Oakland on Shattuck and has since performed on the billings with his heroes, including Steven Wright, Ellen Degeneres, Chris Rock and Kat Williams, on BET's ComicView and Jamie Foxx's Laffapalooza, with urban jokes about, among other things, weed smokers. "You weed smokers say the dumbest things. I was watching the Warriors game with my friend. He said 'The Warriors are having a cool season, huh?' I said, 'Fool, they're in last place.' He said 'I know. But they're consistent.'" Special guest Phil Johnson, who's appeared at the Sundance Film Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, opens with comedy and music. [WR]
