Chuck Close was educated at Yale alongside artist luminaries Richard Serra, Janet Fish and Nancy Graves. But he came of age in the late 1960s with an unceasing series of experiments in portraiture using a voracious array of mediums: most famously, fingerpainting portraits made up of intricate, dot matrix-like cells on a grid that conglomerate into photorealist faces. He studied Willem de Kooning early on, but has since forged his own immense reputation based on the innovations in photography, painting, printinmaking and elsewhere. On December 7, 1988, Close was struck with spinal artery collapse and has since been confined to a wheelchair, which altered his painting ability but not his innovation or experimentation. He's been in more than 800 group exhibitions and had solo shows at the most esteemed places of art on the planet. He recieved the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton in 2000 and did a portrait of Barack Obama. This exhibition comes to the Central Coast, for the first time, from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation, made up of more than 70 etchings, linocuts, lithographs, screen-prints, woodcuts and paper pulp multiples. It opens with a cocktail party 6-8pm Fri, Oct. 26, with special guest Jordan D. Schnitzer, the collection's owner, with a wider and more accessible tour and lecture 10am Oct. 27 with Schnitzer and guest curator Brad Thomas, curator of contemporary art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
