Monterey Bay Bacon, Blues & Brews Festival at Monterey County Fairgrounds

Hold the soy sausages. Bacon, apparently, is back. This festival is an ode to the marbled cuts of swine, inviting top local chefs to have their way, Iron Chef Challenge-style, with Montrio Bistro executive chef Tony Baker's brand of Baker's Bacon, to be judged by The Herald's food writer Mike Hale, Rancho Cielo's Drummond Culinary Academy director Chef Paul Lee and the Weekly's own food editor, columnist and blogger (and one-time rodeo bull wrassler) Mark C. Anderson. The people get in on the action with a People's Choice vote, and music gets plated up big time with the legendary guitar hero Les Dudek, Las Vegas blues combo Pete Contino Band, Bay Area blues guitarist/singer Volker Strifler, and Santa Cruz's Harpin' Jonny. A VIP party gets you in early for special tastings and music by Rollin Tumblin, a local brewries/wineries/artistsans event showcases local strengths, an afterparty keeps things flowing at the Turf Club with DJ Hanif Wondir (who spins the whole dang day), and proceeds benefit Drummon Culinary Institute in Salinas and The Family Network adoption agency in Soquel.
