The central character in August: Osage County might give anything to go out with the glory Gore Vidal did. Instead, Beverly Weston is a melodramatic, chain-smoking alcoholic with his glory years as a famous poet well behind him. Then Beverly fades out after the opening prologue—and a dysfunctional family comes to make arrangements after his disappearance. Their own unraveling, dotted with PUlitzer-winning dark humor and poignant human sensitivity, is theater at its finest. [SR]
