JAN. 9, 2013 HOOTENANNY NEWSLETTER VOL. 1, #91

HAPPY NEW YEAR HOOTSTERS!! Here's hoping this year will be filled with a rational move toward peace and a heck-of-a-lot of music. We sure did our share last year, and this will continue at;

                 HOOTENANNY XCII
                 SAT. JAN. 19TH. 7-10 P.M.
                 PACIFIC GROVE ART CENTER

We will be singing some of the folk songs left out from our great Hoot in November, and will celebrate with our annual "Gospel and Mo-Town Review". This session is dedicated to those who brought about the synergistic combination of church music and blues. For those of us who got caught-up in this during the early 60's, remembering stars like Fontella Bass who hit the top of the charts in 1965 with "Rescue Me", we have to show RESPECT. Ms. Bass died recently and was the daughter of Martha Bass, one of the Clara Ward Singers. That group, along with the Staple Singers, and The Blind Boys of Alabama got rave reviews for their Off-Broadway show "Black Christmas" in 1961 (one of our group was actually there).

It's impossible to cover the more than 70 years of what has been given to us by these groups, but the Blind Boys alone have gone from the 1950's (the Happy Land Jubilee Singers) to singing at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in the 60"s, with Clarence Fountain in the 70's and the not-to-be missed Broadway performance of "Gospel at Colonus" in the 80's. Their "Spirit of the Century" sours and won the 2001 Grammy and features several guest musicians including Charlie Musselwhite. They appeared at the White House in 2010 for A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement...The list goes on, so practice your harmonies and tune up the reverb sound of Pop Staples and come on along!

Many thanks to all who provide the great pot-luck snacks and to the folks at the Art Center who have been wonderful hosts for the past 16 years.
