Edward Albee's 1958 The Zoo Story was maybe the first in a powerful stretch of plays that served as a bridge between the Theater of the Absurd ad the rush of new ideas that coursed across America in the '60s (his Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? landed in 1962). Zoo's story is starkly simple. Peter, a middle-class family man, decides to while away an afternoon by sitting on a bench in New York's Central Park. But he's met by Jerry, a lonely, desperate man who's grappling mightily with life. He talks incessantly to Peter, little by little infecting him with existential questions about life. Mark and Tyler Shilstone, a father/son team (Mark directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and acted in Lance Black's docu-play 8, and Tyler is a stand-up comedian) are the two sides of this battle of wills and ideas.
