This centuries-old retelling of an Aesop fable uses the Italian-born comemedia dell'arte style and irreverent humor in its story of a slave who makes friends with a lion. Together they learn about friendship and freedom, entangled with characters like a trickster, lovers, a captain and a miser along the way. It's a beloved story that kids would like, which is fitting because after the run at MPC's outdoor amphitheater, MPC Theatre Company takes it on the road to schools in Carmel, Marina and Salinas.
2pm and 5pm Sat-Sun. Monterey Peninsula College Amphitheater, 980 Fremont St., Monterey. $15/adult; $12/young adult 16-21, military; $9/child 15 and under. 646-4213, www.secure3.TicketGuys.com/mpc.
