One of the best things about the Monterey Jazz Fest is that no two years are ever the same. The event's marketing associate likens the way the lineups are constructed to the genre itself. “Jazz is kind of like an improvisation where you try not to duplicate what you just played and that’s the way [MJF] books itself,” he says. “Other festivals have the same performers year after year as headliners; our lineup is different every year.” Tony Bennett, Esperanza Spalding, Bil Frisell and Pat Metheny are only a few of the 55th incarnation's headliners.
