At first glance, Julio Morales' illustrated books and fine-line drawings appear whimsical and childlike. But inspired by the design, pop music and street life of his native Tijuana, Morales straddles cultural universes and explores issues of cultural identity as well as more political matters like labor and surveillance technology in his work. A curator at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and founder of the the Queen’s Nails Annex gallery in San Francisco, Morales is no stranger to fine art, but he's also been a teacher in probation programs and public schools. The conceptual and installation artist joins CSUMB's visiting artist series to talk about his work and bi-cultural identity. [SR]
